Quotations: The Art of George Deem, Mattatuck Museum, Waterbury, Connecticut, April 9 - May 17, 2015. Opening Reception, 5:30 to 8:30 pm, Thursday, April 9, 2015. Exhibition curator: Cynthia Roznoy. Painter George Deem (1932-2008) made art about art. Quoting iconic images of Old and New Masters such as Vermeer and Matisse, George Deem re-imagined and re-organized familiar masterworks into entirely new paintings while recreating the style, the light, the brushstrokes, as well as the details of the earlier artists with insight, originality, and wit. The 35 works in this exhibition display the superb craftsmanship of a consummate painter. Borrow as he might, Deem was always painting Deem. Among the works in the exhibition are Horizontal Mona Lisa, Artificial Matisse, School of Arshile Gorky, Continuous Landscape on Four Bricks, La Tour Vermeer, and String Theory.
