This unsigned and undated study of Abraham Lincoln may have been made in response to a request from the photographer Edward Peterson who over the years having photographed several George Washington paintings by George Deem asked the artist why he didn't paint images of Abraham Lincoln, images which Peterson said he himself responded to more than to images of George Washington.
