| Artist's Notes
A painter's history of art is in my case a history of painting. Not a history of all painting from prehistoric caves on, but Western painting as it has been practiced since the fifteenth century in Europe, and wherever migrating Europeans have carried the tradition with them. Western painting has two distinguishing characteristics. One is the use of oil paint as a medium. The other is the use of perspective to render an effect of three-dimensional depth on a painting's two-dimensional flat surface. This is the tradition of painting that I am involved with. ... A painting on canvas is a portable object. Among other things that can be done with it, it can be bought and sold. The final image in this chapter is Auction (pp. 30-31).
