Portrait of Michael Ottensmeyer. The painting is dated by the artist July 16, 1955. Michael George Ottensmeyer is the second son of Edward and Agnes Ottensmeyer. The artist George Deem was Edward Ottensmeyer's first cousin and Michael George Ottensmeyer's godfather. The painting is titled "Mick" and signed "Gus July 16-55". Following the artist's mother's death in 1937, his father's sister Irene Deem Ottensmeyer, then separated from her husband, came with her two sons Edward Jr. and George Deem Ottensmeyer to live with her widowed brother George Deem and his three children in Vincennes, Indiana. There were thus three Georges living in the same house. Family members called the future artist George Deem by the distinguishing name "Gus."
....along with a 1955 water color of myself as a small farm boy that you did in Uncle George's house (George Deem Senior, the artist's father) --in your basement studio -- one summer. (Michael Ottensmeyer, letter to George Deem, December 1999).
Actually, Mick is painted in water color on a water color board, which is considerably thicker than a typical water color paper. The work itself is 13" high by 10" wide. There is nothing written on the back, but in the lower right corner as one views the painting, is George's printing. (Michael Ottensmeyer eMail to Ronald Vance, March 15, 2011).
