(School of Vermeer was) sold by Nancy Hoffman Gallery to Dow Jones & Company in 1986, and ... (returned by Dow Jones about 1996) for re-sale. ...When I saw School of Vermeer at the gallery I found that it has been given an unfortunate brown frame. It seems to me that a smaller plain black frame would be more appropriate for this painting. (George Deem, letter to Garland and Suzanne Marshall, March 15, 1997).
