Evoking past and present, (Double Dutch Landscape) combines word with image, realism and abstraction in a way that is unique to Deem. (Edna G. George Deem (1932-2008) critically investigates how landscapes are understood with his Double Dutch Landscape (1963), where he includes copies of other historical works but frames them so that attention is called to the fact that they are representations -- oil on canvas -- and not records of fact. This is further underscored by the presence of words -- suggesting that the paintings themselves are analogous to text that can be rewritten.
