Evoking past and present, (Double Dutch Landscape) combines word with image, realism and abstraction in a way that is unique to Deem. (Edna G. Southard, "George Deem," The Lay of the Land, Exhibition and Installation Notes for an exhibition of the same name at Miami University Art Museum, Oxford, Ohio, 2002).
George Deem (1932-2008) critically investigates how landscapes are understood with his Double Dutch Landscape (1963), where he includes copies of other historical works but frames them so that attention is called to the fact that they are representations -- oil on canvas -- and not records of fact. This is further underscored by the presence of words -- suggesting that the paintings themselves are analogous to text that can be rewritten. (Lena Vigna, 200 at 200: Ring of Truth, Notes for an Exhibition of 200 works for Miami University's 200th year at Miami University Art Museum, Oxford, Ohio, 2009).
