| Artist's Notes
Reading clockwise, from top center, the paintings in the frames are details of paintings by Vermeer:
The Music Lesson, The Royal Collection, Buckingham Palace, London Woman Pouring Milk (The Milkmaid), Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam The Artist in His Studio (The Art of Painting), Kunsthistorisches Museum, Vienna Young Woman with a Water Pitcher, Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York The frames in my painting are my own, chosen by me for this painting. They are not frames painted by Vermeer, with the single exception of the empty gold frame, upper left, which is from Vermeer's painting A Lady Standing at a Virginal, National Gallery, London. I have chosen to paint only Vermeer's frame so that the texture of the wall on which the frame hangs is seen through and behind it. The wall is the wall of my studio in New York, with its surface reproduced as it was when I was working on Frames, including the nail upper right.
