In a study for School of Matisse I (1987, acrylic on paper, 63.5 X 55.9 cm), Deem, whom I have to thank for making this work known to me, also depicted Matisse's Nymph and Faun (1908-09) the picture leaning against the chest of drawers in The Red Studio. In his painting Deem discarded the use of this image, and that of the goldfish bowl (taken from Matisse's Goldfish and Sculpture, 1911, oil on canvas, 116.2 X 105 cm, Museum of Modern Art, New York...) in the lower left corner of his acrylic study. Like the omission of any indication of the room's corner at this early stage in developing his picture, this bears witness to Deem's deep understanding of Matisse's structural organization, from which he then however had to deviate in order to integrate the school desks.
