| Artist's Notes
Vermeer's Girl Reading on the Map with "Alta Italia" (Vermeer Map) is ink and watercolor directly on an old map from a travel book. The map and words are actually upside down from the Vermeer figure. The drawing was made in 1963 and first exhibited at the Allan Stone Gallery in New York in my one-man show there in February 1964. (George Deem, letter to Udo Kultermann, August 3, 1976 ). (The correct date of the solo exhibition "George Deem" at the Allan Stone Gallery is October 22 thru November 9, 1963, not February 1964as remembered by George Deem in 1976. The exhibition file includes installation photos showing the drawing. Note by Ronald Vance, January 14, 2013).
