Portrait of Fr. Hilary Ottensmeyer O.S.B.
George Deem Ottensmeyer (Father Hilary) was the second son of Edward Ottensmeyer and Irene Deem Ottensmeyer, sister of the artist's father, George Deem Senior. Following the death of the artist George Deem's mother in 1937, Irene Deem Ottensmeyer, then separated from her husband and living in Chicago, returned with her two sons Edward and George to Vincennes, Indiana, to live with her widowed brother and his three children, Selma and the twins George Jr. and John. The artist George Deem grew up with his Aunt Irene (Aunt Rene/Aunt Renie) as his foster mother, and her two sons took on the role of older brothers. The artist was the godfather of Ed's second son, Michael George Ottensmeyer,
