There are two pictures on the background wall in Vermeer's painting The Love Letter. The upper picture is partly obscured by a hanging drapery. George Deem replaced that picture with Picasso's 1922 painting The Race.
In 1978 George Deem changed his original title for this painting from "Cornelisen Vermeer" to "A Letter from Picasso." Ann Cornelisen's photographs of details of George Deem paintings that were reproduced in the catalogue of the1974 Indianapolis Museum exhibition Paintings by George Deem were a prominent feature of that catalogue.
Photo-lithographic print from the painting: 22 X 30 inches (paper) 19 X 21 1/4 inches (image), Siena Press, New York 1980. Edition 300. 3 colors.
