The Immaculate Conception, The Visitation (Composition in Black and Yellow).
These two paintings are inevitable when the artist's eye sees these images every day -- in roadside chapels, in the interiors of grocery stores and banks, on post cards: these images are part of the landscape in Italy. The Visitation (Composition in Black and Yellow)
This picture was painted in Italy. When I was living there I often visited the Uffizi Museum in Florence. "The Visitation" I quote in my painting is a picture in the Uffizi, the artist, Mariotto Albertinelli, 1475-1515. Juxtaposition of the yellow bulldozer against Mariotto Albertinelli's Visitation reflects the daily visual experience experience of living in Italy where contemporary images are continually seen against the insistently visible emblems of earlier centuries and religions and civilizations. Here, it is a painting that looms large over the bulldozer, but the significance for the past of the bulldozing present is inescapable. (George Deem, Note on the painting, April 1, 1980).
